Work out how much carpet your room needs, including a wastage allowance for roll widths, plus an indicative cost for carpet and fitting.
Enter your room measurements below.
Carpet is sold from rolls that are usually 4m or 5m wide. Because your room is rarely an exact multiple of the roll width, fitters allow extra so the carpet can be positioned with the pile running the right way and seams placed sensibly. This calculator adds a 10% wastage allowance to your floor area, which reflects typical UK practice for a standard rectangular room.
For rooms with bays, lots of doorways, or awkward shapes, wastage can be higher, and stairs are measured separately by the fitter. The figure here is a planning estimate for the main floor area, not a cutting plan.
A 10% allowance suits most simple rectangular rooms. Awkward shapes, bays and rooms narrower than the roll width can need more, which a fitter confirms on site.
The estimate focuses on carpet area and an indicative cost. Underlay is bought to the same room area and typically adds £4–£10/m² — factor this in alongside the carpet figure.
No. Stairs are measured separately because each step and any winders need individual calculation. Ask your fitter to measure stairs during the quote.
